Just because we have completely original characters doesn't mean that we can't do the occasional parody. This is, as you probably know, in large part a parody of the opening of FF5. This comic is also the first and last time you will see a chocobo.

I was reading through a bunch of missillanceous sprite comics the other night, and what struck me about them is how 90% of them were ridicously unfunny. The vast majority of the sprite comics I saw were 1. direct ripoffs of either Bob and George or 8-Bit Theater, and 2. discontinued after 10-15 comics or so. As a genre, sprite comics for the most part are a vapid wasteland of non-humor. I find this quite disappointing. In doing Fantasy Qwest, Creator, Authorman, and myself want to break the mold, producing something both original and funny. Just because you're working with sprites is no excuse to be as uncreative as some of the comics I had the misfortune at looking at.

For all of you looking forward to Authorman's NFL predictions, he'll get them posted eventually. With any luck, they'll be up before the next comic. Wish him luck.

To get the maximum impact for this comic, imagine one of the fanfare-type themes from the beginning of FF5 or FF7 playing as the comic goes on. I'm sure you get the idea.

DGC is right in many respects. Sprite comics, just like any other medium of art, are infused with a great deal of rubbish, from which only a few rare gems shine. I'd imagine that many of them started when people looked at 8-Bit Theater or Bob and George and said, "Heck, I can do that", only to find that they couldn't. Fantasy Qwest is different from many of these others in that it, as mentioned in earlier rants, uses an original story with original characters, rather than being derivative from whichever video game the sprites were ripped from.
